The roots of community organizing in Cordesville stretch back to the 1970s, when passionate residents gathered at Greater Emmanuel AME Church to advocate for a local fire station along Highway 402. Led by local clergy and dedicated individuals like Leola Berry Johnson, this effort sparked a legacy of collective action. In 2009, we formally became the Cordesville Community Citizens, and after a brief hiatus from 2015 to 2016, we revitalized our efforts in 2018 under the leadership of President Jerald “JB” Borden Jr. Today, we’re more committed than ever to making a positive impact.
Our Impact
We’re proud of the work we’ve done to strengthen our community, including:
We partner with a variety of organizations and businesses in our community to provide comprehensive mental health services to those in need.
Cordesville is an unincorporated community located in rural Berkeley County, positioned between Moncks Corner and Huger. The history of this community dates back to Revolutionary times when it served as a summer retreat for wealthy planters looking to escape the harsh conditions of their plantations during the summer months. Living in villages like Summerville, Pineville, and Cordesville was believed to improve health by providing a more favorable environment with pine trees and less boggy conditions compared to the rice fields on the plantations. This relocation was thought to significantly reduce the threat of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Unfortunately, most of the village burned down between the late 1800s and early 1900s.
